Born in 1831, he rose to prominence as a leader and holy man of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux, guiding his tribe through an era of increasing pressure from U.S. governmental expansion into tribal lands.Sitting Bull’s leadership was pivotal during the events leading up to the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where he and his warriors, alongside other Plains tribes, achieved a historic victory against General George Custer’s 7th Cavalry.
